What to do?
DIVING
There are nearly 30 different dive sites
around Maumere Bay and the islands. For dives to the islands we
leave early in the morning and go by boat to Pulau Babi, Besar
and Pangabatang. These islands can be seen from Ankermi's Resort
and it takes us about one hour to reach them. Around the islands
there is a great selection of walls, drop offs, slopes, channels
and platforms overgrown with hard and soft coral which are a habitat
for a large number of fish and other marine animals.
Just around the corner from the Ankermi Happy Dive Resort there
are several areas for ‘Muck’ diving - searching for
rare, strange critters which are living in the sand and mud. A
Japanese shipwreck from the Second World War is reached by foot
prior to the dive or with the ‘Happy Dive’ motorized
canoe.
Nightdives are done just outside the resort or about 300 meters
away in the Ankermi bay.

in English or German. We certify from beginner levels (Open Water)
up to Divemaster level. We have PADI Course books in English,
German, French and Dutch, but if you make your course bookings
early enough, we can order books in other languages. Depending
what course you wish to take you will have to plan to stay a few
days.

SNORKELING
We offer snorkeling trips out to the island of Pangahbatan and
Babi. You leave Ankermi Resort in the morning, snorkel all you
want , eat the lunch on the beach, snorkel some more and then
arrive back in the late afternoon. The coral reefs here are quite
pretty with colorful reef fish and corals and with luck you can
also see turtles, sharks, mackerels, rays and possibly bumphead
parrotfishes. Prices
You can also snorkel just outside our resort on a small coral
reef or about 300m away on a patch reef in Ankermis Bay. Both
reefs are quite small and an area to do muck snorkeling.
IMPORTANT: Spearfishing is prohibited in Indonesia and not tolerated
by us! Collecting of marine specimens from our marine environment
is forbidden!

OTHER ACTIVITIES
A lot of our guests like to just spend their time relaxing, lying
in one of our beach chairs, sunbathing or reading a book. But
starting from Ankermi Resort you can also do day trips to the
surrounding islands, villages and mountains.
CLIMBING GUNUNG (MT.) EGON
Gunung Egon is an active volcano and can be seen from Ankermi's
Resort. Please check with us, if you are allowed to climb up or
not, the volcano erupts every other year with smoke and ash (Blog
about the volcanic activity) and then it is not possible to climb
the volcano, but when it calms down again you can go up until
the crater rim. The view here is spectacular deep crater with
steep holes where sulphur and steam come out. Volcanic activity
is daily monitored and recorded in the volcanologic center in
the village of Nangatobong about 3km from Ankermi's Resort. The
workers there are very friendly and will be happy to show you
the infrastructure for measuring and recording the activity of
Mt. Egon. If climbing the Egon is possible we will happily profide
you with all the information you need about where to start the
climb and how to reach the summit.

HOT SPRINGS
Hotsprings abound in Indonesia because of all the volcanoes.
The hot springs lie to the west and only about 8km from Ankermi's
Resort close to the village of Belidit. You turn to the right
just after the village and walk for about 40 minutes through the
forest and along an edge until you reach the hot springs. The
hot water runs into a river and you can choose between hot, warm
or cold water for your bath!

ARAK PROCESSING
Arak, the local spirit is made from the fruit of palm trees in
the villages around Ankermi's Resort. The juice is collected in
the morning and the process starts shortly after that. The juice
is heated in a earthenware pot on a fire and distilled through
bamboo pipes to make arak.
About 30 minutes walk away from Ankermi Resort.
SALT PROCESSING
Around Nangahale (north of Ankermis) a lot of people extract
salt from the seawater by evaporation. The large salt stones are
sold to farmers. The minerals in the saltstones are important
for the health of their cattle.

IKAT WEAVING
There is a small village near Geliting where you can see the
whole process from making thread out of cotton to dyeing them
in natural colors and then setting up all the threads and tying
them down in a ikat pattern to setting up the loom for weaving.

MARKETS
There are several local markets around the area on different
week days and at different places. At these markets the villagers
from up high in the mountains come to sell their goods often dressed
in colorful Ikat weavings. They all sell a big variety of food,
vegetables, fish, animals, bamboo, Ikat, soaps and often some
very unusual things. We can provide you with information which
market can be visited on a particular day.

OVERLAND TOURS TO KELIMUTU, LABUAN BAJO, ALOR
TOURS

Ankermi Happy Dive Resort doesn't offer organized overland tours,
but of course we can help you to contact a driver and guides.
The village of Moni and the colored lakes of Kelimutu volcano
are not so far away from here, you can do a day trip (start early!)
and be back by evening.
Alor can be reached overland and with ferries from here. We can
give you the up to date information when you visit our Resort.
Labuan Bajo (and the Komodo islands) lies in Western Flores and
is§ over 500km from Maumere. To get there it takes a minimum
of 2-3 days overland, the road is very curvy and not everywhere
in good shape. You can also organise a car and a driver. The trip
is through very nice landscapes and interesting cultural site
and really is worth duing it. You pass the villages of Moni, Ende,
Bajawa and Ruteng. You can also fly to Labuan Bajo from Maumere,
but not daily.
PUBLIC BUS
It is possible to go by public transport (busses) all the way
through Flores. We recommend you stop at some of the villages
and towns and enjoy the beautiful landscape of Flores island,
the nature, volcanoes, traditional villages, people, art and wildlife.
We have a small libary with travel books so you can look up all
the information you need.
TRAVEL
An easy way of traveling from one town to the other is by “travel”.
This is a comfortable, private car which holds 6 seats. It collects
the passengers and when it is full, it will start the journey.
It is not as cheep as the public bus but much more comfortable.
